Now that you've learned the lyrics and the basic harmony, let's come up with a more interesting guitar part for this. There are of course a million ways you could play this song, and if you have other ideas than what I'll show you, I fully encourage you to explore those as well.

Can you please add the lyrics into the video?
Mike Olekshy 2 months ago

Hi there - thanks so much for your question! While the words from the song don't appear with the notation in these lessons, they do in the final play along lesson - "Play Song: Will The Circle Be Unbroken". I recommend printing out the notation from the Play Song video, and then using it in the previous lessons. Look for the PRINT NOTATION option below the video in the Play Song video to print it out. Hope this helps!

Why finger picking versus using a pick softly? I find using a pick easier.

Hello - thanks so much for your question! It is simply a musical choice, whether to use fingers vs. a pick. Either choice will give different shades of sound and texture. Anders teaches fingerpicking in this section as it is a very common technique for guitarists, but you can use any picking technique to play these parts. Hope this helps!

Ok this doesn't make much sense to me. In the beginning he says the guitar doesn't come in on the first beat. Correct? The notation shows the guitar coming in on beat 1. He starts the song before the first measure. So are we left to guess where the song starts? It would be helpful if the notation had the words above it. So let say the words start on beat 1 but the guitar comes in on beat 3, it would be a lot easier if it showed that. Instead, you want me to figure it out on my own? It just seems like this lesson could have been done better.

Hello - thanks so much for your question and feedback. You are correct - the guitar starts on the first beat. The vocal phrase comes in earlier, on the fourth beat of the previous measure. If you go to the Play Song lesson: https://www.guitartricks.com/lesson/31622 You'll see the words have been added to the notation so you can follow along. The idea is to key into Anders voice as he plays through the song, and use the lyrics to cue you when to start playing the verse part. It also could help to count along 1 2 3 4 as he plays through the song in the Play Song video. If you count along steadily, you'll find the first vocal phrase leading into the verse starts on beat 4 right before the first beat of the verse guitar part. Hope this helps!
