I dunno... forming an opinion on a musician and claiming that they're the best while also admitting that you've never seen him at his best (how could you if he never shows what he's got?) in the same sentence isn't exactly a winning line. I'm quick to support the ones that put everything they've got into all their songs even if it is a little bit boastful, at least they're giving me an exciting listen.

I'm going to compare musicianship to architecture while covering Tool in a nutshell. A building has width and height. In a metaphorical sense this is like a musician. When a musician learns something, their building grows taller and as they perfect what they know their building becomes wider and wider and the more they learn vs. the more they perfect determines just how wide and how tall their building gets. I'd have to credit Tool as being the pentagon of musicians. They're good at what they do, but they've left out so much ground to cover in music it's not funny.

I like tool well enough I guess. I still feel there are better bands tho.

Yeah, Maynard is brilliant - he could teach Trent Reznor a thing or two about emotion. I prefer his work with A Perfect Circle, though - the lyrics are more focussed, and he's supported by James Iha on guitar :cool:

Well it seems like most of you have the DTs for DT, I never really liked the style, but I'm sure some of the songs would be good for theoretical study. In my mind Phish, or Umprey's Mcgee, and a new one everyone should look into, Disco Biscuits are the best. The dude who put trey down for stuff he did in oysterhead obviously never heard YEM (you enjoy myself) or divided sky, and even stash these are brilliant and are not merely jam band BS. DT sounds like people who liked the 80's way too much. Bands I listed have great control over fusing several varietys of music into one song. I wouldn't even consider jamming with someone if they couldn't see the truth to what I was saying. I also agree that Led Zepplin and Queen are right up there with the greats and maybe even rush, but I don't really get taken away by rush's sound, it more of their concept that is good. Anyhow, check out the disco biscuits they're so good that they distribute all of their songs freely on the archive.org. and if you haven't heard of them yet, stay tuned.... you will.

I stand by my statement: Trey Anastasio, with the benefit of at least a loosely structured song is a much better "improvisor" than he is when the music is purely being made up on the spot.



I think you seem to have a bit of the impression that I'm a Dream Theater fan -- I'm not. In fact, I detest both Dream Theater and Phish pretty equally (though for differening reasons, obviously).

However, I'm not so easily blinded by my personal tastes so as to be incapable of giving credit where credit is due.

Glad to finally have someone else on the boards who've know Umphrey's McGee. Jake is one sick mofo when it comes to playin' and I can't wait to catch a show. Jam on bro.

I was listening to Coheed and Cambria over the weekend. MAN those guys have talent! I don't necessarily like all of the songs, but Claudio and Travis are very impressive guitarists.

Saw them in late December in Chicago... crazy stuff!!! I initially went to see one of my favorite acts to see... Keller Williams. He was headlining for UM. I've been a listener of their music for a long time but I'm officially a fan after seeing them live... If you're talking about jam bands... what about The Allman Brothers Band... in the 70's they were as solid as they came. I guess I'll mention the Dave Matthews Band since we're on jam bands and they're arguably the most popular... each artist in that group are incredible musicians in their own right... I always love it when Dave and Trey get on stage together...

And the guy that mentioned Coheed and Cambria... I've been listening to them quite a bit the last couple years too. They're a solid band. I don't think any modern "mainstream" rock band will ever be able to compete for "most talented band ever"... because you don't have to be talented to create music that is popular and marketable...

Man, its gotta be Floyd...I can understand if you dont appreciate Gilmour because he sticks on the pentatonic a lot and never worried about speed but listen to the bends...thats where its at...Roger Waters is a creative ****in genius...just listen to the lyrics and some of the recurring themes in the concept albums are awesome. The rest of the band Mason and Wright pull their part, too.

One more thing...if you havent checked out Avenged Sevenfold...look em up

I'd say Rush has to be a good candidate. Only 3 members, all absolute masters of their instruments.

I don't think RUSH should even be considered for most talented band ever. yuck..I don't care if they are Canadian or not, I think they suck the poop-chute big time. I don't think this question of "most talented band" can be answered. It's all opinions.
