I stand by my statement: Trey Anastasio, with the benefit of at least a loosely structured song is a much better "improvisor" than he is when the music is purely being made up on the spot.
I think you seem to have a bit of the impression that I'm a Dream Theater fan -- I'm not. In fact, I detest both Dream Theater and Phish pretty equally (though for differening reasons, obviously).
However, I'm not so easily blinded by my personal tastes so as to be incapable of giving credit where credit is due.
