In this example, I am going to show you another, more soulful lick in the style of Albert King. Players like Stevie Ray Vaughn were very inspired by licks like this, and hopefully you will be too. Played in the key of Ab, let's check out how to play this example.

I'm a little confused on the keys. I thought that the key that a scale was in was based on the lowest note in the scale, but the lowest note here is f-sharp or g flat, correct? Am I mistaken? Thanks!

Hey there - thanks so much for your question! You are partially correct - we think of a "scale" with a "root note", which is the lowest note of the scale. But on the fretboard, we use scale "patterns" across the neck. These patterns connect in different octaves depending on where you are on the neck. So in this case, even though the Ab note - 9th fret of the B string is our "root", we can still use notes that belong to the Ab minor pentatonic scale that are below that note. The G# note is legitimately part of the Ab minor pentatonic scale, but we are using it in a lower octave on the fretboard. Hope this makes sense!!
