Our 7 year old granddaughter said she wants to learn how to play guitar (I asked her a year ago, but she wasn't interested then).

Is there a suggested path for someone this young? I don't think she'll want to spend as much time doing drills as she will spend just getting nice sounds out of her new 3/4 size acoustic guitar.

Anyone here with similar experience?

Can't remember how old I was, but I was in the 5th grade when I started learning. My school decided to start a music program (which only lasted for that year) and my parents thought it would be good to put me in.

I just remember learning the basics like Yankee Doodle and stuff, but I remember that I loved playing and couldn't wait for the next class. In the end, it's up to the kid. They either have the interest or they don't. I would recommend an actual instructor, because that's really the only way for them to learn how to play properly. An instructor is there to fix your mistakes and keep you from forming bad habits.

So basically my view is to get her a good instructor with lessons once a week. Not sure if anyone else has had different opinions or experiences.

Hi Mike.. Welcome to GTs.
I'd make sure the guitar has a good set-up..

An instructor, like Hunter says would be the best way, but I think I would want one that specializes in children and is checked out by your community.
This being said, fitting that bill maybe a hard trick. Also take a look at local public schools offering music classes. (group setting)

The lessons here at GT have no age rating and have tons of beginers lessons. The Core lessons has it all. GT can show her the right way.. Then as advanced as she may want to go.

A web search on line showed plenty of links. The link below has 9 free lesson. I seached (guitar basic for kids)
I'm not promoting this site, it just look simple to get from one point to another and also the first one I opened.

Hopefully this helps.

So how does grandpa fill about taking up the guitar for a while? If the granddaughter does not live too far away, it could be great 1 on 1 time and with you both learning at the same time. She would see she is not the only one having trouble make this note or making the fingers do whatever. It may inspire her to stay with it longer, even if you stop learning when she starts getting things worked out a bit.

Like they say, time is the most precious gift you can give a growing/learning child. Maybe your still working and do not have the time yet, but you were asking for idea’s.

Thanks for the good advice, folks!

I will check the kids lessons link...appreciate you posting it.

Finding an instructor experienced in teaching youngsters will be hit and miss, I fear. Both places I've checked with insist they've taught plenty of kids, but there's no way to be sure.

I've considered learning online (here, of course!) along with her, but will have to see how her dad feels about that, since he wants to learn too. She only lives a mile from us, so distance isn't a problem.

So it sounds like granddaughter and her dad needs a 1 year gift to Guitar Tricks. Don’t know of course, but would guess her dad wanting to play is driving her now as well. I have to agree this is the best place for them to start. Then if you decided to try, you can be another resource.

Get a 3/4 size guitar. My son has a Small strat that he got from Santa at age 7.We gave him a Uke at 3. It was the only way he would let me play(would get inbetween me and my guitar and strum for me). The basics are the basics for all ages.
