I'm not that familiar with Buddy holly tunes, but I'm pretty sure he's using the chords A , D and E
Because the individual notes of these three chords are all contained in ' A ' major scale you can play A minor pentatonic over the whole song and it will work
A minor pentatonic is : A , C, D , E , G

With most artists I think, the use of scales was not so much in their agenda. Those guys were either playing chord tones or what to their ears sounded the best. I would say your best bet is to transcribe some of those solos, and you will find patterns and shapes that were very common in their approach. Go get it! :)
