Well they vary greatly from song to song, for slash at least anyway. Slash has a very natural tone so to sound like him just use a gibson guitar. He also uses a Boss EQ boost for solos.
Also for songs like "sweet child o mine" he uses his jim dunlop Wah pedal as filter for extra pop. You do this by pressing the pedal on but leaving is still at the treble position.
