Strings buzz after installing new ones

What did I do wrong? Strings buzz after replacing with new ones. Used good quality strings same as before. Only buzzes on the A and G when fretted. Guitar is tuned well and in great shape. Any thoughts?

What kind of guitar do you have? Fret buzz is usually caused by the strings being too low. If it happened after a string change, it might be due to the strings sitting incorrectly on the bridge or the neck being bowed.

Sometimes new strings are flawed & the windings are broken or loose causing a rattling or buzzing sound. But electric sets have an unwound G string, while acoustic strings have a wound G string. That's why I asked about your guitar.

Thanks, its an acoustic. I noticed the buzz is not as bad today. Does strings take time to relax/stretch after installing?

Looking back on it, it took me a long time to learn that 'we' are supposed to stretch the strings when re-stringing a guitar. It makes a world of difference and pretty much eliminates the settling-in period of new strings.

But that's all about stretching...check with Steve White about your string buzz.

Yes, you can help the process along by stretching them. I cover that in this tutorial.

Also, removing the strings & restrings alters the tension on the neck. So, the neck might have needed to settle in after the change in tension.

What a great tutorial (above)! It's one I missed when it was added last year (I wish I was only four months behind in the rest of my stuff :rolleyes: ). Over time I've collected many how-to's but your set of lessons puts everything together in one place. Super!

I've always been surprised by how many guitarists I know don't bother to wipe down their guitar and strings. I've also been surprised by how dirty their guitars and how cruddy their strings are... :)
