Hi there everybody,
I'm getting little problem with my little finger to reach fret, let say Im getting the fret but not with enough strenght or pressure to get the sound correctly, most of all in the firt 4-6 fret.

There is any exercises that I can do to improve it or to open wide my left hand?

Thank you
Roberto

I could always use more strength in my pinky. One thing that I like to do on a regular basis is to just hold down any fret on any string with my 3rd finger and trill (hammer on and pull off) with my pinky. It's kind of like calisthenics for your 3rd and 4th fingers. It works really well if you do it on an acoustic guitar.

Recently on the GT channel, Anders Mouridsen talked about playing guitar while you are watching television. I can't recommend this enough. Simply sitting there while watching TV, moving up and down the neck of the guitar practicing really goes a long way. An hour of TV watching while just running through simple exercises really, really helps and will get that pinky in shape in no time at all. Check out the video link below;

That is part of GT"s tip of the week, going into a Jazz Guitar Lesson. Try this out the next time you are sitting at home, and it will really make a difference.

Hey Roberto.

I think legato is a great way. Try doing all of your exercises with hammer ons and pull offs a little bit each time you practice. Just make sure that when your pressing down with your pinky that you simultaneously lift your finger that was fretting the prior note.

Another thing to add to this; try using your pinky finger more frequently. Have a legato lick that you are more comfortable with using your first three fingers? Try using your pinky instead of your ring finger in a practice routine. This type of betterment is simply achieved through repetition. You are training your pinky just like you had to teach your other three fingers. Patience my son. I feel there really aren't too many fast routes to this kind of thing; it simply comes via practice.

I have a Sweep Picking course that has a lot of arpeggios with a hammer on after the first note of the arpeggio and a pull off after the last note of the arpeggio.

For instance pulling off from the 17th fret to the 12th on the High E string.

It has greatly strengthened my technique. Having a good guitar/setup is important too. My last guitar made legato a nightmare but my current guitar makes legato much more of a breeze.
