can someone please tell me what the difference is between a 4/4 and a 4/8 time signature?I mean i know that in 4/4 it's 4 beats per measure and the quarter note gets the beat and in 4/8 its the same but the 8th note gets the beat. But,What is the difference in counting?I know you count 4/4 as 1 2 3 4.But how do you count 4/8.Or is 4/8 really just the same as 4/4?

You've got the idea. They both require "a four count", but in 4/4 the quarter notes get a whole beat or count and in 4/8 the eighth notes get a whole beat or count.

A subtle difference to be sure. But it really comes down to how the composer intends for the measures and beats to be subdivided. That's why someone may chose one time signature over another. Ultimately a time signature should create conceptual & perceptual clarity. It should make seeing and understanding the notation easier to get done the job of playing the music.

Have you seen these?

What about 6/8 timing? This is the only timing I can't work out in REAL terms.

Oh never mind just checked out the timing tutorial by Sean.. that solved it :)

For all y'all that can't afford a full version.

4/8

ONE-and Two-and Three-And Four-And.

6/8

ONE two three Four five six. It's a triplet feel.
