My friend with the several-grand PRS (just the latest of his 12 or so pieces) who's a fancy-pants Hollywood studio pro guitarist told me that Ibanez is fine if it's got somebody's name on the headstock... otherwise, he says, the electronics suck and need upgrading, particularly the pickups (if they're the house brand).

Aside from the chintzy starter pak model I had... I never went with an Ibanez bass unless it was a signature edition. I'm not saying I wouldn't have... but the Ibanez I have is a signature edition (Gary Willis).
