Chris, I was wondering about your version of the harmonic major scale? The one you posted, 5th mode of the harmonic minor. To me that's the Spanish Phrygian, or "gypsy" scale. I've never heard it referred to as the harmonic major before. The harmonic major I have is just a regular major scale but with a b6. I looked it up and that's what I found a few times. I like what you got though, especially the thought of the addition of the b2 to balance the b6. I know alot of the major melodies I pull out of my head come with both those accidentals. Even the harmony V7b5 - I sounds colorful. I could be just crazy though. The reason I am wondering is because I tend to think of the harmonic minor as being diatonic, when the spanish phrygian is not. The b2 makes for more of a spanish sound, but then roughy modal with an added b7 when put to a progression. A dominant functioning root and a minor V chord doesn't seem diatonic. However alter the b7 to natural and it does seem diatonic, and changing the b2 back to a natural also make the scale seem more rounded off (although this is a cool accidental). Leaving one characteristic I like about the harmonic major scale, the minor IV chord. I brought this up because I see a clear distinction between those two scales, and you didn't seem to clear in your post.
