A guitarist is more accomplished at playing guitar than a "mere" guitar player. Or a guitarists plays guitar professionally.
But any strict defintion of guitarist is "a person that plays guitar". In other words, a guitarist is a guitar player. And a guitar player is a guitarist. :)[br][br]

So, a composer that can also play guitar can still be called a guitarist.
A music director could play keyboard as well as the guitar but we don't use the word guitarist, we use as music composer.
[quote=Philip Charles]So, what is the specific/unique character of the guitarist like Eric clapton, BB king, Jimmy page, John petrucci, etc.
They are all guitarists. Or guitar players. Some of them are also singers, songwriters, arrangers and, or composers.
Make sense?
