What version of Ableton are you using? I was checking it out last night and I find it interesting to be able to use MIDI to create backing tracks. The versions go from $99 up to over $700! I wonder if the cheap $99 version is good enough for some basic stuff.

The whole MIDI thing intrigues me since you can have access to various instruments without having to physically have them or know how to play them.

Now that we are starting this band, I'm going to have to try to squeeze this type of stuff in between learning songs! Better late than never, but I wish it was 20 years ago when I had all the time in the world for this stuff :-).
