A Whammy pedal has a fair few settings, but all manipulate the note - for example:

Pushing it up through one or two octaves as you rock the pedal.
Dropping it down an octave as you rock the pedal
Dive Bomb
Harmonising with a 3rd / 5th of what you're playing
