Well, because he created music based solely on the frame of mind that drug-inspired music is good or even listenable. Syd didn't take the time to actually become a good musician, all he produced was a drug-induced stupor people refer to as "music." Take a good listen to "Piper at the Gates of Dawn." It's not even bearable. Syd Barret's going insane was the best thing to happen to Pink Floyd since their inception.
