Having seen Trey in a purely improvisational environment (Oysterhead's first performance mid-way through "Harold of the Rocks" at a Primus concert in Burlington, VT) and having heard his rehearsed material from Phish and Oysterhead (which is, actually, relatively structured), I'm skeptical of this.

I'm by no means a Petrucci fan, but I've seen what happens when Trey and two other people are making it all up on the spot and (to put it mildly) the results are horrid.

When it comes to being a "more engaging and entertaining improvisor," I can't tell you where Petrucci stands relative to Trey Anastasio, but I can tell you that relative to Larry LaLonde, Trey is outclassed by a very large margin.
