With the trends in AI, 'smart' prosthetics, and nanotechnology, it's reasonable to contemplate the possibility that mankind's next evolutionary transition will be from Homo Sapiens to Homo Technicus, to Homo Cyberus. At some point, our search for replacement parts will lead us to become more and more a constructed entity composed of 'wetware' contained within artificially manufactured bodies. Along the way we may stumble across whatever it is that makes us self-cognizant. This would fundamentally alter our concepts of what constitutes a living being.
