Remember that the birth of modern cell biology (and hence understanding at a molecular level why cells and organisms die) is still very young. When you consider that until 1954 the structure and biological significance of DNA was unknown, we as a species are not doing too badly !! In the last 50 years we have not only gone to the moon but also mapped the human genome (that is the entire genetic information within the human population !).
